53: Lisa Hayim (@thewellnecessities), NYC-Based Registered Dietitian

On this episode, I sit down with registered dietician Lisa Hayim (@thewellnecessities). She discusses her online programs, and her choice to set them at accessible price points. We talk about listening to our bodies and their feedback, and the importance of setting the framework for modern, mindful eating. We compare our past and current struggles when it comes to eating, and the difference between being full and feeling full. We dive into self-esteem versus self-worth, and how we have evolved in these areas.

Follow Up Q&A:

  1. First thing you do in the morning? Oftentimes, hit snooze.

  2. What advice would you give your younger self? To trust the process, and lean into the pain, and to know that the difficulty will be worth the person you're becoming.

  3. Wellness trend you love and wellness trend you wish would end? Infrared sauna- I'm realllll into it, and my guasha- changed my face and my self care routine.

  4. First Job? First "job" was an unpaid internship during high school. Instead of class, I commuted to NYC to work in fashion believe it or not. First paid job? Hmm... maybe working at Camp Shane as a pilates instructor/counselor.

  5. Proudest moment? Anytime I lead with my heart rather than my mind, I feel proud of me for getting out of my own way. Most recently, the launch of Ditch Diets for Good has made me proud as I offered something incredibly valuable at a great price. Aligning with my values and hearing these testimonials makes me feel super proud.

  6. 3 most used emojis? ️ 😂❤️🤘🏻

  7. Favorite ice cream flavor? cookie dough? chocolate? peanut butter? this question is too hard, pass.

  8. Coffee or matcha? coffeeeeeeee!!!!!

  9. Bath or shower? BATH!!!!

  10. Person or brand you are currently loving on Instagram? Brand: @wildling_beauty - they make a guasha tool I love and I love the way they show how to use it!  Really love to learn about skincare and body work. Person: My friend @darakaye is wonderful. She is not an influencer, she has her own PR firm.  She's become a friend that I look up to. She shares so organically and she has never steered me wrong with her instagram stories her in our personal conversations.  Her and her business partner Gwen are best friends and their friendship is hilarious. She's the type that truly elevates other women. I also love @KelseyJPatel for just being herself and having no EGO when it comes to instagram and @HannahBronfman for being so intentional with how she shares. I have learned so much from all 3 of these women that I incorporate into my content sharing/life.

Lisa and I reference an email I once sent her, and I went waaaay back into the archives to find It! This was during the very beginning birth phase of freckledfoodie and when I was coming to terms with some obsessive behaviors. In response to a post of hers regarding the feat of becoming fat, I sent…

“Lisa, this post was so moving and hit so close to home that it definitely deserved more than an instagram comment. I cannot tell you how much all of your writing and thoughts resonated with me. I am just starting to come to terms with the fact that a lot of the things you mentioned (fear of becoming fat, fear foods, and letting these things control you) are issues I face but, until recently, have refused to truly acknowledge. I grew up playing sports my entire life and was fortunate enough to be a tiny athletic girl that didn't have to really worry about what I ate. It wasn't until recently, after I graduated college, that not only did I become the unfortunate owner of a laundry list of digestive and stomach issues, but also much more aware of what food was going into my body. While I have tried to maintain the mentality that there must always be a balance in life and that if I am trying my best to eat whole, natural, and real foods then I will be okay, it overwhelms the shit out of me. My stomach issues caused me to become hyper-focused on every single thing that was going into my body. I became that girl at restaurants who asked a thousand questions about the menu and all of it's ingredients. While at first it was simply because I thought these specific foods were causing me pain, it has become something greater than that and it scares me. I find myself obsessing over what my next meal is and in situations you eluded to (missing out on social activities in favor of eating a healthier or more "approved" meal). I cannot thank you enough for this piece and bringing light to this issue and encouraging me in the sense that there are other people out there who have gone through, and overcome, similar issues and to also truly force me to take a step back and reassess myself. Truly, thank you. I would love to hear any advice you may have on how you overcame all of this and began to truly love yourself again. Also, I have been putting off finding and seeing a therapist (mainly because I am so overwhelmed by the idea of researching to find one that I like and the time it will take) but I realize how helpful they can be. If you have found one that you love or know of any that focus in this realm and would ever feel comfortable enough to share their names I would greatly appreciate it. Once again, thank you for being you!”
